Why Sunglasses are as Important as Underwear

Over a period of history, dating back even to the 12th century (so I’ve been told. The 12th century is just a wee bit before my time), sunglasses have undergone quite a few changes in terms of functionality and appearance.

  • In the beginning, China witnessed the first occurrence of sunglasses, which were most commonly worn by the wealthy.
  • Later in the 18th century, sunglasses with vision correction were conceived by James Ayscough.
  • Sunglasses really took off in the 1920s, which was contributed by the prevalence of the film industry.
  • During the decades after the 1930s, sunglasses were widely accepted and has since maintained its popularity.

Traditional sunglasses were only expected to offer proper protection against UV rays and HEV radiation. Then came the innovation in sunwear style ( various shapes, sizes and colors).  Today, sunglasses have become more than just a popular accessory. They are in fact quite as important as underwear. You’re probably wondering where I’m going with this. It’s simple actually. We all wear underwear to cover our asses. That’s about the only reason I can come up with right now for wearing underwear, but when you think about it, the only reason we wear sunglasses is to cover our eyes, right? WRONG. There are actually a few more functionalities of sunglasses. They not only come in handy to protect eyes from UV rays, but they also come in handy when:

sleepy dog glassesYou’re sleepy.
Far be it from me to judge anyone that wears sunglasses indoors. Well actually not far be it from me. I’ll judge. People look crazy wearing sunglasses indoors but I never stopped to consider that maybe those crazy folks are wearing their sunglasses indoors because they were up all night doing sinful things and woke up the next morning looking like a zombie from an episode of the Walking Dead. Hell, if I looked like that I’d hide behind a pair of dark specs too. Shit. Maybe I need to put my sunglasses on because I feel like my forehead will formally and intimately introduce itself to this keyboard any minute now.

You’re hungover. You can’t tell me that you’ve never gone to work with a hangover. The lights are too loud. The fax machine is too loud. Your head is pounding too loudly. The color of your blood shot eyes are too loud. What better way to hide your disheveled face than behind a pair of your darkest lenses? Sure, everyone may still be able to smell the alcohol seeping out of your pores, but smelly pores never looked so good behind an obscure pair of specs.

You’re having a bad hair day. You have to admit that sometimes even your best outfit can’t hide those straggly strands. Your clothes are too far away from your head. It’s not enough of a distraction. And if you think your outfit won’t distract from your head, then you can forget about your shoes. Don’t waste your time on sky high heels or the whitest pair of kicks money can buy. Instead throw on the coolest shades you can find. They’re right on your face and everyone looking into your dome will be fascinated that you owned your messy look. No matter what you wear; no matter how bushy, nappy, curly or bald your hair is…whether your braids are too tight or half of your baby hair has fallen out on the bus, a nice pair of sunglasses ALWAYS looks good and pulls a look together. They make whatever style you’re rocking, good or bad, look as if you meant to do it. Your bad hair day, coupled with a nice pair of sunglasses instantly transforms your style into BAMA CHIC. Problem solved!

You’re covertly checking out someone’s boobs. Men do it. Women even do it. Everyone checks out boobs. In an attempt not to single out any one group [boob lovers], sunglasses are also used to check out someone’s pecs, butt, and pants prints. Checking out these body parts is usually inappropriate, no matter what situation you’re in. Sunglasses are necessary to hide your roaming eyes so someone doesn’t accidentally roam their fist into your face.

In the end, the aesthetical progression in the sunwear industry does not conflict with sunglasses’ functional dimensions. They marry quite well, actually. In today’s world you can get a great pair of sunglasses in all shapes, sizes, and colors. And no matter how ugly the glasses are, how bad your hair is, how wrinkled your clothes are, or how disheveled your face appears, if you throw on a pair of sunglasses you instantly look cool. Sunglasses aren’t just a fashion thing. They are a necessity and should be a staple in everyone’s wardrobe.

To me, sunglasses are like potato chips – I can’t have just one!  In fact, I have a pair for each voice in my head.

Second Half-Year Review of the Top Pet Peeves of 2010

Well kats and kittens, we’re back with our second half-year review of the Top Pet Peeves of 2010.  When last we met, we ranked the highest pet peeves for the 10th chapter of the new millennium, and boy was it a doozy!  [For those of you who skipped class that day, here’s what you missed – Hottywood’s 1/2 Year Review of the 20 Top Pets Peeves of 2010…So Far].

It should come as no surprise that the idiots of our polluted world have managed to top themselves with yet more of the most annoying things they could possibly think of.  And yours truly has taken the initiative to come forward and put those very same idiots on full blast.  Why?  The answer is simple.  Because I don’t give a… Well, I think you get the idea.

So sit back, relax and see if we share views on the exasperating sh*t that people can come up with.

People who start off every sentence with, “I.”

Call me crazy, but people who are so wrapped up in the boringness (if that’s even a word outside of the Ebonics dictionary) of themselves should be cast over the side of a short plank, hovering over a sea of man-devouring jelly fish.

And that’s putting it mildly.

People who look like their pets.

I know I’m not the only one who has witnessed the circus freak who looks like a dog  — I mean like their dog.  They say when you spend so much time with someone, you begin to look alike.

People whose greatest accomplishment is calculating the number of bed mates they’ve had in the past 6 months.

Generally, folks who brag about their sex lives are usually not getting any at all.  That’s what makes them so damn funny.  They’re not lying to anyone but themselves.

The joke’s on you, skank!

Lazy people who want you to wait on them hand and foot instead of finding some useful purpose for their existence other than taking up oxygen.

Sometimes you just want to take those cupcakes and shove ’em right up their ass!

Celebrities who spend half their lives trying to be famous and then hide behind dark sunglasses to keep from being noticed.

As soon as their bright star fades, they’ll be doing some ridiculous thing to get attention again.  And our dumb asses are waiting to see what they do next.

People who fart at the dinner table.

Seriously, what disgusting ill-mannered moron wouldn’t have the decency to pack a travel-kit air freshener when having an attack of a gassy ass?

People who don’t tell you your fly is open.

These are just mean and nasty bastards who are secretly trying to get a good look at your family jewels without being sued for sexual harassment.

However in a perfect world, a gigalo might not mind this slick act of hornismness

That’s right.  I said it.  Now whatchu gon do about it, sucka!?

People who are consumed by their cell phones.

It’s because of people like you that Oprah is enforcing this NO PHONE ZONE bullsh*t.   As far as we know, you’re probably just calling the weather only to make yourself look more important than you’re actually not.  You’re not fooling anybody.

People who can’t lie right.

When you break out into a sweat, your eye starts twitching and you can’t keep still, chances are you’re lying and everyone around you can see it.

P.S., nobody wants a bad liar on their side.  It’s like being picked last for kickball.

“A good liar is a better ally than an enemy.  A bad liar is good for nothing.”

Words to live by.

People who sniff underarms only on Thursdays.

…for obvious reasons, of course.

This gives new meaning to the phrase, “I smell a rat.”

Lindsay Lohan.  …again, for obvious reasons.

If I’m not mistaken, old Fire Crotch made her way onto our Top Pet Peeves List during the 1st half of the year.   Why can’t this winch get her life together?  Does she know how many other starving addicts would kill to have her celebrity?   Sometimes you just can’t help but to hate people who abuse a good thing.

(She wasn’t worth enlarging the picture.)

People who think showing their fat rolls is cute.

If you don’t sit your fat ass down and cover up with a beach blanket, you better.

Look, I’m not knocking big people and those who love them, but there’s no reason for you to blind us with the sight of cellulite and twinkie rolls.  Have a little respect for those folks who actually want to keep their lunch down.

Now excuse me while I go puke.

Church ladies with those annoyingly big ass hats.

If your church ladies are anything like mine with their outrageously big hats, you’ll learn that carrying BB guns will come in handy so you can shoot holes inside the hat in order to see what’s happening at the pulpit when the preacher is preaching or when one of the awful choirs are murdering a church selection.  But like a good Christian, you’ll put your hand over your heart, lie, and pretend like nothing’s getting on your mofo nerves.  And then you’ll go home and talk maliciously about that big ass hat and how it probably didn’t match a damn thing the ol’ church lady was wearing, anyway.

Supervisors who are no more skilled than the office mail clerk.

Fortunately I’m lucky enough to have some good supervisors, but believe me when I say I’m one of the few lucky ones.  For all of you who are not me, this one’s for you!

Fast food drive-thru attendants who make you pull over to the side to wait for your food.

Instead of pulling to the side, pull your car through the front of the restaurant’s window.

I bet next time they’ll serve you in 60 seconds or less.

People who lie to your face and then will turn around and stab you in the back.

I have only one thing to say to you:

Pedestrians who ride their bikes in the street.

<— Look at this picture and tell me that pictures aren’t worth a thousand words.

BEEP BEEP Motherfu****!

People who pee in gas tanks and don’t post it on YouTube.

Aw c’mon, you know this is funny as hell and should be shared with all of the world.

As as long as some old geezer isn’t pissing inside your gas tank, what should you care?_________________________________________________________

I guess there’s no need to reiterate that people are more than capable of coming up with some pretty unbelieveable sh*t.  But if you really think about it, without the stupidity of others, we wouldn’t have much to talk about at the water cooler.

Look, it doesn’t take that much effort to keep your simple crap to yourself.  But it also doesn’t take that much effort to find out what simple crap you’re hiding.  After all, 90% of any effort is getting started, no matter what side of the fence you fall on.

In the Dark About Sunglasses at Night

I am about to ask the age old question, “Why do people wear sunglasses at night?”  Is it me or is that an oxymoron?  It could be that only morons do it, but before I pass judgment, let’s give it a small thought and try to analyze the sense of this senseless fashion faux pas.

Once upon a time, arguably in the early 80’s during the height of the hit release, “Sunglasses at Night” (Canadian song-writer Corey Hart) it seemed only celebrities donned camera fronts, red carpets, and club venues with their eyes covered in fashionable eyewear in the wee hours of the night.  However now-a-days it appears everyone has fallen prey to this stylish misstep.  Logically, it makes no sense.

Wearing sunshades at night should be a crime.  It isn’t hip.  It isn’t safe and it suggests you have something to hide.  Not to mention, it doesn’t protect you from walking into walls.  Though imbecilic as this may sound, you’d be surprised to know that this trend is just as popular with the older generation as it is with the younger generation, obviously for different reasons, of course.

For teens and young adults, doing the whole sunglasses-at-night thing is all about image and style.  It’s about looking cool and making a statement.  But if you ask me, if they’re not P. Diddy, the only statement they’re making is, “I look dumb.”

On the other hand, most old geezers who are ophthalmology patients find that wearing sunglasses at night — ones with a slight tint as opposed to deep black lenses — can cut down on the unpleasant glare that comes from headlights and streetlights.  This only makes sense if they’re playing in traffic or swinging like monkeys from a streetlamp.  However old people have earned their right to do whatever the hell they want and not give a damn about what anyone thinks.  So if they want to be stupid and knock over their denture cups or play in traffic and run the risk of getting hit by an oncoming truck, let ‘em! Wisdom comes from our elders, so they must know something us younger folk don’t.  There’s a lot to be learned from them, just don’t soak up this fashion-DON’T – your life could depend on it.

Whatever the reason, even in the name of fashion, I wouldn’t suggest wearing shades at night, or indoors, for that matter.  You have a lot to lose.  For example, your sense of style and possibly your reputation for ‘frontin’ like you a Gee, homie.

I hereby cast my vote to lock anyone walking the streets or driving a car after the sun has laid its head to rest, in a dark room for three days and feed them nothing but the crumbs of week-old bread while forcing them to watch the full run of Little House on the Prairie.  If that doesn’t teach them, nothing will.

As we come to a close, I should take this opportunity to inform you of the only few reasons why covering your eyes at night would be acceptable:

  1. You’re a drunk or a pothead and you need to cover your red ass eyes;
  2. You need to protect your ego because someone has just inflicted a scathing insult to your dumb ass for wearing sunshades when there’s no sunlight to block;
  3. You’re a pirate who forgot your eye patch in your other bootleg; or
  4. You’re a spy.

All jokes aside folks, take off those stupid glasses.  If you have something to hide, trust me, you’ll drop your bomb in other ways.  But not as easily if you practice.  It all begins with removing the shades.  It just takes a little effort, and 90% of any effort is getting started.
